If you know the personality of the Hon. District Chief Executive for the Nadowli-Kaleo District, you can attest to the fact that she is passionate about women empowerment, agribusiness and tackling the adverse effects of climate change which is a looming threat to food security. Against these credentials, Hon. Katherine T. Lankono in recognition of her interest and commitment to the development of the Nadowli-Kaleo District was invited to serve as Special Guest by FUJI OIL GHANA LTD for the inauguration of two established warehouses built by FUJI OIL GHANA to provide improved storage conditions for Shea nuts collected by rural women popularly called SHEA COLLECTORS in the Jang and Sankana communities in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region.
This establishment commissioned by the Hon district chief executive will provide 100 tonnes capacity Shea warehouse in Jang and Sankana. Additionally, various skills training will be provided for women Shea collectors through the Global Shea Alliance (GSA) and local NGO’s to equip project beneficiaries with protective equipment’s to keep them safe as they forage for Shea nuts.
The DCE in her remarks acknowledged that the Shea industry is traditionally dominated by women and provides a source of income for many families particularly in rural areas of Northern Ghana. Shea has a long value chain including refined oils, butter, medicinal and pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics among other relevance.
She bemoaned that we have long extracted only butter which offers lesser economic benefits in terms of income creation and job creation. Hon. Katherine called for increased partnerships and industrialization to fully exploit the many benefits the Sheanut offers. She equally leveraged on the platform to advocate against the felling of economic trees like the Shea tree for charcoal and asked all present to be watch dogs of our economic trees.
Hon. Katherine thanked the board and management of FUJI OIL GHANA for this strategic investment in infrastructure to serve as a storage facility for Sheanut collectors. Just like Oliver Twist, she asked for increased investment in up scaling the economic life’s of women since they run the local economy.
The Hon DCE was accompanied by the vibrant district coordinating director Madam Safia Abudulai.
